What is Urgent Care?

Urgent Care Medicine (UCM) is a specialty that focuses on providing prompt, outpatient medical care when someone cannot be seen by their primary care provider or needs after hour care. Urgent care clinics see patients for problems such as routine illnesses or injuries that are not severe or life threatening.

Most urgent care clinics offer on-site laboratory testing and X-rays to assist with diagnosing the patient. They typically do physicals for work, school, and sports. Some even offer vaccinations.

Urgent care facilities provide a bridge between a busy primary care office that may not be able to accommodate a patient with a same day appointment and the long wait times in an emergency room. These centers offer immediate treatment for acute illnesses and injuries but do not manage chronic, long term conditions. Often times the service is provided on a walk in basis where no appointment is required.

Everyone 6 months of age and older should get a flu vaccine every season. The CDC recommends “universal” flu vaccination in the United States to expand protection against the flu to more people. Vaccination to prevent influenza is particularly important for people who are at high risk of serious complications from influenza.
